News from our heritage partners

Handsell to break ground for Three Cultures Center Nov. 8

The Nanticoke Historic Preservation Alliance (NHPA) will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Three Cultures Center and host an Autumn Open House at the Historic Handsell Site near Vienna on Nov. 8. The ceremony begins at 11am, and the open house runs from 11am to 3pm. The event is free and everyone is welcome! The new building’s name, the Three Cultures Center, references the Native, African, and European cultures that are closely connected to Handsell. The barn-like structure will provide NHPA with much-needed meeting and office space, as well as storage and bathroom facilities, and offer new possibilities for public programming. Handsell is located at 4837 Indiantown Rd., Vienna. Learn more about Handsell.

Revolutionary War Patriot honored in Rhodesdale

Wheatley Methodist Church in Rhodesdale had a grave marking ceremony in October to recognize William Wheatley, a Dorchester County Revolutionary War soldier. According to historians, Wheatley was born in 1757 in the Dorchester's Fork District. Wheatley’s father, Edward, was a trustee of the Wheatley Methodist Episcopal Church. William Wheatley was part of the Continental Army for three years. It is assumed that he, like his father, was a member of the congregation. The church is believed to be the nation's oldest American Methodist church with a continuously active congregation.
